What Is The Darknet?
- Don’t click on suspicious links, be skeptical of what you read, and avoid dark web marketplaces if you don’t want to stumble on illegal activity or content.
- An Altoona man allegedly used his neighbor’s Wi-Fi to access child pornography online.

- In particular, we found that CSAM items were being sold on both Chinese dark web markets without the need for memberships or any other gate keeping practice in place.
The cabyc market, on the other hand, is new and only appeared in early 2022, therefore, its sales volume is 72 during the observation period (see Figure 1b). We reviewed and checked ten popular dark web markets, as detailed in the previous section. We quickly found that there are stricter policies in the English market that prohibit the sale of CSAM products. Literature related to the search terms and/or keywords used to find or sell CSAM on the dark web were selected for inclusion. The creation, discovery, or refinement of search terms and/or keywords for CSAM on the dark web had to be included in the methodology, results, or discussion of relevant literature. Given the anonymity of the dark web, there were no inclusion criteria specific to age or demographics.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A Jacksonville man has been found guilty of receiving child sexual-abuse images and videos over the internet using a “dark web” application. It’s also dotted with sites that specialize in illicit pornography, including child porn. Many of the sites are illegal, but there are exceptions to this rule. You can find forums, blogs, and social media sites that cover topics such as politics and sports. Investigators around the globe catalog child pornography, looking for clues that can lead back to the creators or re-sellers of the content.
One of those users was Richard Huckle, a Briton living in Malaysia, who was given 22 life sentences in 2016 after pleading guilty to 71 charges of sex abuse of children aged between six months and 12 years. On Saturday, the hacker spoke to Motherboard about the rationale behind the attack. “This is in fact my first hack ever,” the intruder wrote via an email sent from the same address posted to the hacked Freedom Hosting II sites. “I just had the right idea.”The hacker continued, “Initially I didn’t want to take down FH2, just look through it,” but after finding no fewer than 10 child pornography sites with some 30 GB of files, action had to be taken.
The Troubling Intersection of Child Porn and the Dark Web
The phenomenon of child porn dark web is a disturbing reality that impacts societies worldwide. The anonymity and secrecy provided by the dark web have allowed for the proliferation of illegal activities, including the distribution of child pornography.
Investigators said they found “images of most severe sexual abuse of toddlers” among the photos and video material. The three main suspects were a 40-year-old man from Paderborn, a 49-year-old man from Munich and a 58-year-old man from northern Germany who had been living in Paraguay for many years, the prosecutors’ statement said. They worked as administrators of the site and gave advice to members on how to evade law enforcement when using the platform for illegal child pornography. Prosecutors wrote that they found “images of most severe sexual abuse of toddlers” among the photos and video material. The authorities said the platform was “one of the world’s biggest child pornography darknet platforms” and had been active at least since 2019.
Just like in the old days of the internet, the dark web maintains numerous indexes of sites, like The Hidden Wiki. Unlike Ahmia and Haystak, however, DuckDuckGo doesn’t search .onion sites. Use it to search the normal internet from the privacy of your Tor Browser. Haystak also offers a premium version that allows advanced search, access to historical content, and email alerts.
For practitioners working with individuals who commit CSAM offences, it would be important to know whether interventions would differ if the CSAM was accessed in the darknet versus the clearnet. Clear intervention pathways should also be established to deter the onset or perpetuation of CSAM offending, thus enabling law enforcement to focus on those forum members who pose the greatest risk to children and who encourage cognitive distortions of forum users. There is a cohort of darknet forum members that discuss wanting to seek help to stop engaging with CSAM (Insoll et al. 2022). However, due to the suspicious disposition of CSAM forum members, there may be a reluctance by them to engage with therapeutic interventions advertised on the clear web. Further research is needed to develop deterrence and intervention strategies within these CSAM darknet forums, which could potentially reduce the number of potential or onset individuals accessing CSAM.
Understanding the Dark Web
These companies use various tools to automate the gathering and analysis of criminal activity being discussed online. They can scan Twitter for threats to specific locations or individuals, or search for keywords and locations – essential as a legal enforcer in the world of underground terrorism and extremism. That web site has appeared in at least two other child pornography cases in Brooklyn federal court. Federal authorities have accused Luis Escobosa of using the Tor network – a so-called “dark web” service that allows its users to go online anonymously – to access child pornography.
The dark web refers to a part of the internet that is not indexed by conventional search engines. Accessing it typically requires specific software, such as Tor. While it is known for privacy and anonymity, it also harbors illegal activities.
